The Suleiman Hearing and Educational Foundation (SHEF) Board of Trustees embarked on an important advocacy visit to the Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness, Abdumumini Kabir Usman, as part of our ongoing mission to promote hearing health and inclusive education in Nigeria. The visit marked a significant step in our commitment to engaging traditional leaders in our efforts to address the challenges faced by individuals with hearing disabilities.
The Purpose of the Visit
The aim of the advocacy visit was to seek the support of the Emir and his council in raising awareness about hearing health and the need for more inclusive educational opportunities for disadvantaged individuals, particularly those living with hearing impairments. Traditional leaders like the Emir play a pivotal role in influencing public opinion and mobilizing community action, making their involvement critical to the success of our initiatives.
During the visit, SHEF representatives highlighted the following key points:
- Raising Awareness on Hearing Disabilities: The importance of early detection and treatment of hearing loss was emphasized, alongside the challenges faced by those who live with hearing impairments in accessing education and employment.
- Collaboration in Community Outreach: We sought the Emir’s support in helping us reach more people in Katsina through community-based hearing screening programs and educational campaigns. His backing could significantly enhance our ability to impact rural areas where awareness about hearing care is often limited.
- Educational Support for the Disadvantaged: The foundation requested the Emir’s assistance in advocating for better educational resources and inclusion programs for children with hearing disabilities, ensuring that they receive quality education alongside their peers.
